"Arthur Huc, art lover and editor of the magazine Le Dépêche de Toulouse, used the lithograph . . . together with the lettered poster . . . to advertise the serial novel Les Drames de Toulouse by A. Siégel. The novel is set in the eighteenth century, and to match the text, the artist has used a dramatic style of drawing, with rich contrasts, that also occurs in some of his later lithographs" (Adriani, p. 23). Le Pendu - "The Hanged Man," is one of three historical moments that Lautrec illustrates for his hometown magazine; in this 1760s scene, Jean Calas discovers the body of his son.
